Library Code of Conduct
You must not:
- Eat, drink, smoke or vape in the library
- Display any kind of notice or poster in the library without the permission of the Librarian
- Use library computers for purposes unrelated to your education or sending emails
- Install any software onto a library computer or download material onto the hard drive of a library computer without the written permission of staff
- Disrupt other students’ learning and study or in any other way create an unsafe, disagreeable, or uncomfortable atmosphere
- Leave litter anywhere except in garbage bins
- Damage or deface any library resources
- Remove library resources without approval from the Librarian or appropriate management.
- Breach any Federal or State Government legislation, particularly with reference to copyright, intellectual property rights or any illegal use of computers, such as hacking.
- Breach licencing conditions for any software or other online resource.
- Attempt to stay in the library after closing time or during an evacuation (e.g., during a fire drill).
The Librarian is authorised to:
- Deny students access to computers when they are being used illegally or for purposes unrelated to learning or important personal use
- Intervene to prevent disturbances, harassment, or other inappropriate behaviour
- Inspect bags carried by any person suspected of attempting to carry library resources out of the library without permission
- Intervene to prevent any breach of the Student Code of Conduct or any library rules, evict people responsible and bar their re-entry.
If you wilfully damage or deface a library resource or other equipment, you may be compelled to pay for repairs or replacement plus a processing fee.
You will receive an email reminding you that the day before the due date for borrowed items. If you do not return resources on time, you must pay a fine. High unpaid fines may result in withholding grades and refusal to issue graduation documents.
Breaches of the Library Code of Conduct will be investigated in accordance with MHE’s standard disciplinary procedures. The Dean will call you, the librarian and any other person who witnessed the incident to a meeting within ten working days. All presents will be invited to speak about the incident without being interrupted and then ask everyone questions if necessary. The Dean will give a written decision within ten working days.
You may make an internal appeal to the CEO within ten working days. The CEO will convene a committee comprising him or herself and two members of staff not previously involved in the investigation. The Committee will call you, the Librarian, any other person who witnessed the incident to a meeting within ten working days of lodging the appeal and hear all present without being interrupted and then ask any questions necessary. The CEO will give a written decision to all involved within ten working days.
